When you realize that a band like Nine Days broke out of Long Island, you realize that Soul Tip could be among the next to make the jump from self-produced albums to a major lable. The seven songs here show a good sense of structure, diversity and lyric-writing. The buzz is that majors are already scouting them,no surprise there. Led by vocalist Alex Mehran and guitarist Lars Hedstrom, the rhythm section of bassist Sal Tarallo and drummer Joe Mehran complete the alternative-pop quartet. In the groves of their work, you can pick up influences of bands like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and The Beatles, yet there's also signatures of people like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains mixed in. Soul Tip sounds like all those bands and none of them at the same time, forging their own potent mix of soul-searching ideas and story-telling.Particularly good are the ethereal "State of Things" and the rhythmic whirlpool of "Eerie Song." "She" begins melodically where Zep's "No Quarter" left off and the result is a song,as well as an ablum, full of shadows and moods all neatly executed by a most musical bunch. Soul
Tip has a lot of enticing aspects that will garner them
support from industrytypes and fans alike. If you want to be on the ground
floor, find a copy now or buy one under the big splashydisplay somebody
like a Warner Brothers of Interscope sets up for them next year. Twelve
Years And A Day will keep you entertained for at least that amount of
time.
